World’s Largest Purchaser of Consumer Goods? The U.S. Government – and Amazon Wants In
The world’s largest purchaser of consumer goods, from pens and paper to cleaning supplies, is the U.S. government. Now, Amazon wants to be the supplier of that vast amount of purchased goods.
Amazon is wanting to become the government’s vendor of choice, which would allow Amazon to collect fees on a part of the more than $500 billion spent annually on federal purchases.
According to the Governing Institute, a Washington, DC-based think tank that studies government spending, city and state agencies spend close to $3.25 trillion annually, making local government the second largest US industry behind manufacturing.
