UPS Expects Holiday Returns to Hit a New Peak
UPS is warning retailers (especially those who cover the costs of returns for customers): holiday returns are about to break records. The parcel delivery company expects shoppers to return roughly a million packages every day during December, with that number rising to 1.6 million the week before Christmas. Returns could reach their peak on January 2, according to UPS, with 1.9 million package returns, about 26% more than last year’s peak.
“As ecommerce retailers continue to provide more return-friendly policies, shoppers are buying and returning more online than ever before,” said Andrew Lipsman, eMarketer principal analyst. “While the post-Christmas frenzy is to be expected, the fact that Hanukkah falls so late in December this year means that returns will be extra-concentrated in late December and early January.”
