The NRF Wants a Broader Definition of “Essential Retail”

As fears rise over the global coronavirus pandemic, state and local officials are ordering retailers to close their doors. But the National Retail Federation says that some of those stores should remain open. The organization has written a letter to President Trump asking him for federal guidance on which retailers are considered “essential” – and asking that the definition of essential retailers be broadened to include pet stores, truck stops, and hardware stores, among others.

“There remains a need for clear national guidance to resolve questions caused by a number of conflicting state and local orders that are triggering consumer, worker and business confusion, leading to cascading negative impacts on communities across the country,” the letter said.
