Supermarkets Are Still the Leading Destination for Fresh Produce

A recent study by Food Marketing Institute, “The Power of Produce”, revealed that supermarkets are still the main retail venue for fresh produce. While that’s good news, a troublesome trend for retailers is that younger shoppers aren’t as tied to grocery stores as older shoppers. Half of all shoppers said a full-service supermarket was their primary store for purchasing fresh produce.

Still, the FMI study revealed that the younger generation exhibits a greater affinity for buying fresh fruit and/or vegetables at supercenters and alternative retail channels, including online, dollar stores, convenience stores and farmers’ markets.
