Panic-Buyers Chose Supermarkets Over Walmart
When coronavirus-related panic-buying was at its peak, customers flocked to supermarkets to stock up on essentials. Visits to Walmart failed to show the marked increase that visits to supermarkets did. But by the beginning of May, visits to Walmart were on the rise again, outstripping visits to supermarkets.
One analysts remarked that Walmart was prepared for a crisis like the coronavirus, saying that if the pandemic had hit two years earlier, Walmart would not have been ready.
The data offers a snapshot of some of the dramatic changes in Americans’ shopping patterns in the weeks before and after the United States implemented lockdowns intended to curb the spread of coronavirus.
