Nike Is in Hot Water Following an Explosive Opinion Piece from a Former Sponsored Athlete
Nike is facing another controversy following an opinion piece posted in the New York Times. Olympian Alysia Montano claims that Nike temporarily discontinued their contract when she became pregnant. During this time, Montano wasn’t paid. Nike has admitted to introducing “performance-based reductions” in certain athlete’s fees. Montano claims that Nike’s recent campaign featuring Serena Williams is hypocritical based on how she was treated in the past. Analysts believe that this controversy will not impact sales.
“The reality is Nike(’s)… marketing and their messaging is also inclusive … I believe that as long as they are not putting their head in the sand we are unlikely to see a sales miss.”
