New York City May Soon Ban Cashless Stores

New York City may soon be the latest to ban cashless stores, such as Amazon Go. Several cities and states have already banned cashless stores, requiring businesses to accept cash payments.

New York joins those who say that cashless stores can discriminate against low-income and senior consumers who tend to not have bank accounts.

Mayor Bill de Blasio’s office and the bill’s sponsor, City Councilman Ritchie Torres (D), are working together to shape a bill, introduced in February, that could go before the full council as early as this summer, said Raymond Rodriguez, Torres’ deputy chief of staff.
