Leaving Amazon Could Come at a Cost to Brands
For all Amazon’s problems (bad press, counterfeiting, competition with its third-party sellers, etc.), ditching the marketplace altogether still might not be in a brand’s best interest. Nike and Ikea have made headlines recently for making exactly that call, sparking fears that others might follow suit, but experts are urging caution. They point out that Amazon’s platform is very hard to replicate, and that customers can still find a brand’s products for sale by third-party sellers even if that brand has left Amazon’s marketplace.
Ultimately, if Amazon continues to clash with brands, more of them are likely to leave. But the exodus is also likely to be a slow drip rather than a flood.
