Amazon Is Drafting Facial Recognition Regulations to Recommend to Lawmakers
Concern is mounting over the use of facial recognition technology, which critics say could lead to civil rights violations. Amazon markets the technology to both corporations and law enforcement, and the prospect of such high-tech surveillance has lawmakers ready to step in. Now, Amazon is preparing its own set of guidelines and regulations of facial recognition technology to propose to lawmakers. Jeff Bezos made the announcement in response to a reporter’s question at Amazon’s Alexa event in Seattle last Wednesday.
“It’s a perfect example of something that has really positive uses, so you don’t want to put the brakes on it,” Bezos added. “But, at the same time, there’s also potential for abuses of that kind of technology, so you do want regulations. It’s a classic dual-use kind of technology.”
